About us

Established in 1985 by Alan and Nelly Cooper, the vineyard is positioned in a natural amphitheatre, at an altitude of 610 metres above sea level. The sunny warmer northern slopes of the Great Dividing Range and the mineraly granitic sandy soil play a major part in the success of the vines.

We are producers of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah and the first commercial production of Lagrein in Australia and are committed to quality - the vines are hand- picked, hand pruned and hand tended and the wines are made with passion and crafted with care.

Cobaw Ridge wines are of individual character and style. All are 100% estate grown, made and bottled, and show full flavours which richly reflect this special vineyard site. Certified Organic 2009 / Biodynamic 2011:NASAA.
We are approximately an hour's drive from Melbourne CBD via the Calder freeway and just 15 minutes east of Kyneton, Victoria, Australia

A small, family-owned Macedon Ranges producer, we have also been accepted into the international biodynamic winemaking group, Renaissance des Appellations. Return To Terroir

...Certified organic (NASAA), adopting biodynamic practices. Alan and Nelly Cooper's 5 ha vineyard, justly renowned for multi-layered, wheatmealy chardonnay, peppery shiraz/viognier (Syrah) and the best lagrein in the country, achieved full organic certification in 2009...

...These are, simply, brilliant wines of terroir...

...when I taste Cobaw Ridge wines I’m taken, in mind, to wine producers like JJ Morel in Burgundy and Pyramid Valley in Canterbury, NZ. Other wine producers who eke out wines of single sites, great interest, individual personality and a kind of quirk of their regions, yet purity too. Striking wine in a small line-up of Australian chardonnay ....

Events

  • Budburst annual Macedon Ranges Wine Festival (November): which bursts into life to honour the beginning of a new grape growing season. A time to sample the excellence of the region's local wines ... and food… is a special occasion to join Alan and Nelly in the vineyard as a part of the festival.

  • 2014 Cobaw Ridge Chardonnay: This is built for Chardonnay lovers; for lovers of complex, refreshing yet judiciously oaked chardonnay. Has nutty, nougat whiffs about it but descends into ripe citrus, baked apple, floral things. Fresh scented and a sea breezes through too. That sea breeze distils to a saline tang of acidity underlying ripe, flavoursome, fruity-fruit characters all just kissed with nougat oak. It crackles with chardonnay grapey-ness but shows the layers requested of fancier wines. It's very good.

  • 2014 Cobaw Ridge Pinot Noir: "It's bright and delicious . It's delicate and brittle. It's shy but wonderful. It's got multiple personalities and high drinkability. 94/100 Mike Bennie : The Wine Front
  • 2013 Cobaw Ridge Lagrein: Jeremy Oliver (@Jeremy_Oliver) 18/07/2015 19:21 : Twitter: Just opened Cobaw Ridge's 2013 Lagrein. Wow! This piercing, savoury red is quite brilliant.

  • 2012 Cobaw Ridge Syrah:  "If you like medium - bodied, intensely flavoursome shiraz grown in cool, high altitude vineyards, try this beauty: subtle but seductive scents of pepper and dark humus lead to a sinewy mouthful of glossy blackberries and powdery tannin." 2012 Cobaw Ridge Syrah in my top drops Column in the July 2016 issue of Gourmet Traveller Magazine."

...Their vineyard work is biodynamic (certified since 2011). The wines are pretty serious, and probably deserve more recognition than they get. Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah all excel, made in a natural way with the sole addition being that of sulfur dioxide. Syrah is particularly impressive, including the sans soufre botting from 2014. A speciality here is Lagrein, a northern Italian mountain variety that seems to do quite well in Macedon ...
