About Us

Midhill Vineyard is on the Romsey Road to Woodend, 2km west of Romsey. Our vineyard is in a cool place on the Great Dividing Range at 540m altitude and East of Mount Macedon. It produces bright focussed wines from grapes which ripen slowly with warm days and cool nights. Harvest is usually from mid-March to early April but can be as late as early May. The cold climate of the Macedon Ranges is conducive to producing fruit which retains good acidity and subtle fruitiness in the wines.

The Midhill Vineyard site is well suited to Gewurztraminer. This variety, when grown in cold areas with well drained, volcanic soils, produces the best flavours and aromas. Environmental management practices have been adopted to protect the 5 Mile Creek (Romsey Creek) waterway which flows through the property.

Hew and Di Richards first planted Chardonnay grapes in 1993 followed by Gewürztraminer and Pinot Noir in 2000. These vines are now well established and are producing high quality fruit which is made into sparkling Macedon and table wines under the Midhill label. We make two Sparkling Macedons.

Our “Blanc de Blancs” is a dry, citrus style with developed honey overtones. It has spent at least after 3 years on lees before release. The current release is 2010. The just released sparkling “Chardonnay-Pinot Noir” 2011 is a broader style with good fruit on the mid palate. Our "Gewürz" is made in a dry style with classic Turkish delight and lychee flavours and a floral aroma. It is well suited to Thai spicy cuisine and sea foods. Current release is 2013.

The Pinot Noir table wine (clone MV6) is produced in French oak, and is peppery with good varietal flavours. The current release is 2010. Our annual production is small, but we aim to grow high quality fruit for high quality wines. The family farm, as well as growing grapes, produces grass-fed Angus cattle for quality beef.
